During their enforced confinement there is a danger that our chickens could get bored. If they get bored then they’re more likely to squabble and peck at each other, pull out each others feathers and stop laying eggs.
To try and avoid this we need to try and keep their environment stimulating. We can do this by encouraging their normal behaviour, like scratching and pecking in the earth for worms and other tasty treats. You can see a tray of earth in the corner of the video below. They can also be encouraged to scratch around in straw by scattering dried meal worms or corn in it.
We also hang up lettuce and other leafy veg so the chickens can peck at it and make corn dispensers that require some effort from the chickens to make them give up the corn.
