Winter molt

You may have noticed the chickens are looking a bit scraggy at the moment with one in particular, Barbara, looking like she’s being plucked ready for the oven!!

Don’t worry!! This is natural and is called the winter molt. As the days shorten it triggers an ‘out with the old, in with the new’ response and all birds will molt. Some have a ‘soft’ molt which is hardly noticeable at all. Others go through a ‘hard’ molt and lose enough feathers to make the chicken shed look like a crime scene fit for Horatio Caine and his CSI Miami colleagues. No prizes for guessing that Barbara is going through a hard molt.
